About Kevin

Kevin in ParliamentKevin Bonavia was selected by the local Labour Party in June 2007 as Labour's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the constituency of Rochford & Southend East at the next General Election.

Kevin was born in Malta to a Maltese father, John, and a Scottish mother, Yvonne, and his family moved to London when he was 8 years old. Kevin went to school in South-East London followed by a degree in History at the University of Birmingham and a Postgraduate Diploma in Law at the College of Law, London. Now aged 31, he works as a solicitor specialising in commercial fraud litigation.

Kevin joined the Labour Party when he was 19 and became involved with campaigning on young people's concerns, particularly better education and street crime. In 2004/05, Kevin was Chair of the Young Fabians, the under-31 section of the Fabian Society, the country's oldest political society which acts as a policy think tank for the Labour Party. In that time, he encouraged the Young Fabians Schools Project, which involves members giving lessons on the democratic system in school classes, as well as visits to other young democratic organisations around the world.

Kevin is still an active member of the Fabian Society, as well as a member of the Society of Labour Lawyers (where he has worked on promoting the concept of an Equality Act), Unite trade union, and the Co-operative Party. In his spare time, he enjoys travelling, diving, playing football and watching Tottenham Hotspur.

Kevin explains how he carries out his role as Labour's Parliamentary Candidate:

"I try to act as a both a listener and a voice on behalf of the local Labour Party for the people across Rochford and Southend.

This means getting out and about as much as possible, listening to residents' concerns on their doorstep and learning about what our communities are doing whether it be through our schools, residents' groups or local charities and volunteer projects.  Whenever I can, I get answers from our Labour Government and pass on the good ideas from the people I meet.

Although all of our area is represented by a Tory MP and is run by a Tory Council, my aim is to show people that there is a better and fairer alternative with Labour."
