About Our Area

The constituency of Rochford & Southend East covers the Central and Eastern part of the Borough of Southend, including parts of Westcliff, Southchurch, Thorpe Bay and Shoeburyness. It also includes the historic market town of Rochford, the village of Great Wakering as well as Little Wakering, Barling Magna, Sutton and Foulness Island.

Historically, the army has maintained a base in Shoeburyness, and owns a great deal of land where it tests munitions. The Ministry of Defence still regulates access to Foulness Island.

Most of the constituency falls within the jurisdiction of Southend Borough Council, a Unitary Authority which separated from Essex in 1999. There are currently six Labour councillors representing wards in this area, David Norman, Judy McMahon, Ian Gilbert, Margaret Borton, Stephen George and Mike Royston.
